Atelier Volten is the still-intact former studio of André Volten (1925-2002) in Amsterdam-North. Volten was among those in the vanguard of geometric abstract sculpture. His iconic sculptures are an inherent part of our experience of urban design. He realized about 60 outdoor sculptures, both in the Netherlands and abroad, of which 21 in Amsterdam.

What happens to the work when the artist passes away?
Asterdorp
Atelier Volten is housed in the former 'Poortgebouw', the gatehouse of Asterdorp, meanwhile recognized as what had become the fourth ghetto of Amsterdam during World War II. Volten squatted the place in the 1950s and prevented demolishment. Today, the gate building houses a gallery space, where the André Volten Foundation regularly organizes exhibitions and at which time Atelier Volten is open to the public. The living area upstairs is left untouched. Atelier Volten is part of the international Iconic Houses Netwerk of unique museum houses.
